What is a Cataract:?

A Cataract is the opacification of the once clear crystalline lens of the eye.

Causes: Age related/senile (most common) , trauma, metabolic conditions like Diabetes Mellitus.

Battery of examination you should expect before your cataract surgery:

  • Visual acuity: Detailed vision assessment to know the improvement as well as to get the general idea about the macular function of the eyes and to determine the visual loss because of the cataract. This will help in prognostic evaluation of visual recovery after cataract surgery.
  • Intra ocular pressure
  • Slit-lamp examination: To know the type of cataract along with its opacity, morphology and aetiology or any associated ocular pathology.
  • Indirect ophthalmoscopy: for complete retinal evaluation. Dense cataract will prevent retinal evaluation and such cases need B-scan for retinal evaluation.
  • A-scan biometry: To calculate the AL and IOL power for implantation in cases of mature cataract the posterior segment of the eye is evaluated.
  • Optical biometry: this is an advanced non-contact method to measure IOL power. It is patient friendly and highly precise.

When should you plan to get your cataract surgery?

  • It hampers your daily activities and interferes with clear vision.
  • Glare/ light sensitivity.
  • At an optimal time- the earlier concept of cataract surgery should be planned after the cataract is RIPE/ mature does not hold true, since we have very advanced technology at present and in order to make the most of the latest technology, it is best to avoid too much delay.

Phacoemulsification

Phacoemulsification (commonly known as laser cataract surgery):

  • Is latest technology in Cataract surgery.
  • It is a micro-incisional stitch less operation where cataract is emulsified by ultra sound energy, liquefied & removed through a phacoemulsifier probe (you will not be able to see the cataract that was removed since it is liquified)
  • A foldable intra- ocular lens is then implanted in the eye permanently.
  • Vision restoration is possible in a short period of time & is least traumatic with early rehabilitation & recuperation.
s

Advantages

  • It is Stitch less.
  • Micro incision to ensure faster healing.
  • It is done under Topical anaesthesia (by putting drops) or with an injection as needed. So no need to patch the eye except in special circumstances
  • Spectacle free surgery for far & near is possible
  • Patient can get back to work in the shortest possible time

How to choose the best IOL?

Your eyes will be checked and the IOL will be measured before the surgery, using several advanced measurements which assess the,

  • Axial length of the eye
  • Refractive properties or power of the cornea
  • Predicted position of the IOL following surgery
